The
quality and sophistication of locally woven textiles has
long been appreciated within Sierra Leone; and the
display of Sierra Leone 'country cloths' at the great
British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 aroused the
admiration of large numbers of visitors from all over the
world. Surprisingly little, however, has been written
about these cloths, many of which must rank among the
masterpieces of African creative genius. |
In
this book the major Sierra Leone weaving traditions are
examined on the basis of both field research and the
study of material preserved in Museums outside the
country. The various loom types are investigated from a
technical point of view, and the cloth produced is
explored. A number of older textiles of great importance
are illustrated and placed in their historical and social
contexts. Emphasis is placed not only on cotton but also
on the widespread but generally overlooked craft in
Sierra Leone of raphia weaving. |
